Psyllium and acacia are both soluble fibers, but they behave differently in a gut that's already slowed down. Psyllium absorbs water and forms a thick gel that adds bulk — effective, but it needs a lot of water to work, and it can feel heavy if your stomach is already emptying slowly. Acacia doesn't gel. It ferments slowly and gently, which makes it easier to tolerate at the doses most people need.
If you're on a GLP-1 and fiber has already backfired on you once, that difference is the whole story. Here's what's actually happening.
Why does fiber sometimes make GLP-1 constipation worse?
Because bulk without water is the problem, not the solution. GLP-1 medications slow how fast your stomach empties, which is part of how they keep you full — it's right there in the FDA prescribing information for semaglutide and tirzepatide. That slowdown continues through your intestines, so waste sits longer and your colon pulls more water out of it. Add a bulking fiber without adding water, and you've made a bigger, drier mass that has to move through a slower system.
This is the trap most people fall into. They read "eat more fiber," grab the psyllium canister, mix it into one glass of water, and feel worse within three days. The fiber wasn't the wrong idea. The type and the water were.
Two more things stack against you on a GLP-1:
- You're eating less. Less food means less fiber from food, right when your gut needs more help.
- You may not feel thirsty. GLP-1s can blunt appetite and thirst cues together, so your water intake often drops without you noticing.
What is psyllium, and how does it act in a slowed gut?
Psyllium is soluble fiber from the husk of Plantago ovata seeds. It absorbs water and forms a viscous gel that adds bulk and softens stool — and it barely ferments, so it produces very little gas. It's the most-studied fiber for regularity, and the American College of Gastroenterology's chronic constipation guidance has long treated it as a first-line option.
That's the case for psyllium, and it's a real one. Here's the case against it on a GLP-1:
- It's water-dependent. The gel only works if there's enough fluid. Under-hydrated psyllium is the mechanism behind most "fiber made it worse" stories — here's the full troubleshooting guide if that's where you are.
- It feels heavy. A thick gel sitting in a stomach that's already emptying slowly can add to fullness, bloating, and pressure.
- It's gritty. Sounds trivial until you're doing it every day for a year. Adherence is the whole game with fiber.
Common brands: Metamucil, Konsyl, plain generic psyllium husk powder.
What is acacia fiber, and why is it gentler?
Acacia fiber — also called gum arabic — is a soluble prebiotic fiber from the sap of the acacia tree. It doesn't form a thick gel, and it ferments slowly and steadily instead of all at once, which means far less gas and bloating at the same dose.
Slow fermentation is the part that matters for you. When fiber ferments fast, gut bacteria produce a rush of gas — that's bloating, pressure, and in some people the sulfur burps GLP-1 users complain about. Slow fermentation spreads that out. You still feed your gut bacteria; you just don't pay for it in discomfort.
The tradeoff: acacia is gentler, so it does less mechanical bulking than psyllium. On its own, it moves things along more softly rather than forcefully.
What about inulin and fiber gummies?
Most fiber gummies use inulin or chicory root fiber, which ferments fast — and fast fermentation is exactly what a slowed gut handles worst. It's the aisle's most common fiber because it's cheap and easy to make taste good in a gummy, not because it suits GLP-1 users. If gummies gave you gas, bloating, or sulfur burps and you concluded fiber doesn't work for you: it was probably the inulin.

So which fiber should you take on a GLP-1?
If your gut is sensitive or your stomach already feels slow and full, start with acacia and ramp up gradually. If you want maximum bulking power and you're genuinely willing to drink a lot of water with every dose, psyllium works. Skip inulin-based gummies.
Whichever you pick, three rules hold:
- Start low. A third of the label dose for a week, then build. Ramping too fast is the second-biggest reason fiber backfires.
- Add water on purpose. Don't wait for thirst — on a GLP-1, thirst is an unreliable signal. Pair every dose with a full glass, and keep drinking through the day.
- Give it a week. Fiber isn't a laxative. It works by changing stool consistency over days, not hours.

Why fiber alone often isn't enough
Fiber changes what's in your gut. It doesn't do much about how fast your gut is moving — and on a GLP-1, slow motility is the actual problem. That's why so many people do everything right with fiber and still feel stuck.
The other half of the equation is water inside the colon. Magnesium citrate works osmotically — it draws water in, which softens stool and helps it move (the magnesium half, explained). - Severe or worsening abdominal pain
- Vomiting, or an inability to keep fluids down
- No bowel movement for a week, or constipation that isn't improving with hydration and fiber
- Blood in your stool
- Unexplained weight loss beyond what your medication accounts for
Constipation is a known, dose-related side effect of GLP-1 medications and often improves as your body adjusts, but it's worth telling your prescriber about — sometimes the answer is a slower dose escalation, not a supplement.
